Community Umpiring Week: Celebrating Our Local Umpires

From the 6th – 13th of May, leagues and clubs across the country celebrate their local umpires in Community Umpiring Week.

With the ever-increasing participation of Australian Rules Football, Community Umpiring Week aims to encourage people to get involved with umpiring at the community level.

The week gives important recognition to umpires across the country for their contribution to the game and generates excitement around umpiring, similar to the buzz surrounding players and clubs.

While playing a vital role in our game, umpiring offers an alternative way to participate in the sport and is a great way to keep fit, develop life-skills, and meet new mates.

Over the course of the week, expect media content featuring our umpires speaking about their umpiring experiences.

ACT and Regional NSW Umpire Coordinator, Josh Dunstall says he fell in love with umpiring and emphasises the importance of people getting involved in umpiring at the community level.

“I would recommend anyone who is interested in giving umpiring a go to actually try it, you might not like it, you might love it.”

“Coming from a playing background, I never thought I would be an umpire but once I gave it a few tries, I fell in love with it.”

“Without umpires you can’t have a game. We are the ones out there on the ground making sure the games are played in a way that allows teams to compete and play hard football while keeping within the rules of the game.”

“It’s really important that we get as many people as possible umpiring in all regions across the country because it’s great fun and it’s really good for community football.”
