Footy For Fun – AFL Masters ACT Encourages New Players Ahead of Round Two Fixtures
Round two of the Heart, Mind and Soul AFL Cup is set to commence this Friday at EPC Solar Park in Phillip with a double header, as the ANU Griffins take on the Australian Command and Staff College Masters at 6:30pm, followed by the ACT Cockies vs the Weston Creek Wildcats at 7:45pm.
Referring to the Masters community as “a group of tragics who love playing footy and who love hanging out with each other.” AFL Masters ACT President Matthew Gately spoke on Masters footy and the mantra of ‘footy for fun’.
“You get this eccentric range of people who can’t play footy at all, to some people who have played really high level footy.
“There’s no desire to win or stand out, it’s just to have fun and that’s the Masters mantra, footy for fun… we all love footy.”
Gately went on to explain the Heart, Mind and Soul meaning, and the benefits of getting down and having a go.
“It’s a combination of the three dimensions of the heart, mind, and soul. It’s good for you physically, it makes you think, and the soul is the comradery and the friendships you make.
“Anyone and everyone is welcome whether you’ve played at the top level or never at all.”
If you or someone you know is interested in getting down and giving AFL Masters a go, winter training is on at Stirling Oval, Wednesday nights from 6:45-8:00pm. All are welcome from 30 years old to 70.
