Canberra Hosts AFL NSW/ACT Girls Schools State Championships
The New South Wales and ACT Under 18 Open Girls and Under 15 State Championships were held at Kippax Oval in Canberra last Wednesday, June 20.
Both divisions were well represented by thirteen different teams from schools across the state as far reaching as Bega, Kelso and Wagga.
AFL NSW/ACT Schools and University Program Manager Jonathan Bence was impressed with the interest shown in the competition.
“It was brilliant to see the excitement and commitment of the girls and staff to display such a positive display of AFL football.” Bence said.
“Women’s AFL is flourishing in high schools across New South Wales and the ACT and our talent staff noted many quality footballers with high skill levels, contributing to a very high standard of competition.”
Bence also praised the efforts from support staff and teachers that enabled the students to participate.
“The teachers and staff from the respective schools are dedicated and passionate about travelling to this event to allow their students to experience a quality state level sporting competition”.
Both the Open and Under 15’s State finals were won by St Francis College Leeton with two impressive wins. Bega High school fought gallantly in the Under 15’s final but unfortunately couldn’t prevent a “3 peat” of State Final victories by St Francis going down 6.10.(46) to 1.0(6)
In the Open division St Francis Leeton held off an attacking Mater Dei Catholic College to secure their 2.4(16) to 0.2.(2) win.
