AFL Canberra introduces Lake George Junior Australian Football League
The Australian Football League (AFL) is introducing the first ever junior competition into the Southern Tablelands in
February 2018. Following on from successful Auskick programs, the league will give boys and girls aged between ten to
twelve the opportunity to play football for their town. Teams will come from Yass, Murrumbateman, Bungendore,
Gundaroo and Goulburn.
The Lake George Junior Australian Football League Competition will run between February and March with each town
hosting weekly matches to be played on Saturday mornings. The six week program will introduce children to competitive
football and provide an accessible alternative to the Canberra competition.
Luke Martin, Game Development Manager for ACT/South Coast is confident that the competition will create an improved
pathway for young people in these regions.
“We want to ensure that we are giving kids the best chance possible to get involved and have a go. To do this, we need to
make the game accessible to our young players and their families so they can participate.” Martin said.
The games will have modified rules to enable participants all backgrounds and skills levels to play the game to the best
of their ability. This program will also allow families to trial the game before committing to a twenty week season.
“It’s very exciting. This is the first year of the competition and we can’t wait to see how it rolls out. ” Martin said.
