AFL Canberra Update – July 16

Today the ACT Chief Health Officer delivered the Community Sport Checkpoint announcing that Community Sport can resume contact competition in the ACT from Midday Friday, 17th of July.

This update is welcome news for our competitions, clubs and teams in our quest to get players back onto the field in a safe and responsible manner, however there will still be a number of logistical matters we and clubs will need to work through. I understand that there may be a number of questions following this announcement which I hope we can answer some of these below through the below, and through our recently updated ACT Return to Contact Training, NAB AFL Auskick & Competition Protocols, FAQs and Checklists which we will update tomorrow and will make available at our website:

The key takeaway from today’s ACT, in the short term, is that Full Contact Sporting Competition can return in the ACT, however this does come with a stipulation: Indoor and outdoor spaces can be used by groups of up to 100 people (including staff, trainers and spectators), or one person per 4 square metres, whichever is the lesser”. We will continue to work with the ACT Government to gain an understanding and ensure alignment with their advice in the event of further easing of restrictions at the next Chief Health Officer Checkpoint on Thursday July 23, with hygiene and safety protocols firmly in place. We have every confidence, based on the current advice from the ACT Government, that restrictions will ease further if we play our part, and we will be in a position to continue to move forward with our season. Please note: NSW Government Community Sport Protocols have not changed.
That said, please see a snapshot below of what this means for our competitions, right now:

Our primary focus is to ensure our Clubs, NAB AFL Auskick Centres and League is prepared to return to contact competition and continue to train in a safe environment that is a carefully managed. In order for this to be successful, it is essential that clubs and individuals work within the protocols and the NSW/ACT government restrictions, ensuring not to move ahead of the current restrictions.

AFL NSW/ACT will continue to follow any direction from government and align with the AIS Framework for Rebooting Sport, to ensure community football activity in NSW/ACT does not compromise the health of individuals or the broader community. As we say in footy, ‘know your role, play your role.’ we all have a role to play in our community and it’s important that we all play ours.
