Steve Mahar Accepts New Opportunity
AFL NSW/ACT wishes to advise that Southern NSW and ACT Regional Manager Steven Mahar has accepted a new opportunity with the YMCA in Canberra as their Executive Manager overseeing all centre operations in Canberra.
First hired in 2011, Mahar began his career with the AFL as the Talent and Coaching Manager for the ACT and the South Coast of NSW before progressed to lead the ACT and Southern NSW regions as regional manager.
During his tenure, Mahar has driven major facility projects, AFL investment for the ACT and Southern NSW, and led consistent growth in participation across Southern NSW and the ACT. Mahar has also played an integral role in the growth of GIANTS in Canberra through guiding clear talent pathways and building their presence in the capital.
AFL NSW/ACT CEO Sam Graham thanked Mahar and paid tribute to his significant contribution to the AFL.
“Steve has had an outstanding career with the AFL and has contributed substantially to the growth of our game in the ACT and Southern NSW.
Our game is a strong position in both regions thanks to Steve’s work, with Canberra’s Tom Green picked 10 in last year’s AFL Draft highlighting the great possibilities of our game.
I would like to personally thank him for his significant contribution to the AFL and wish him all the very best in his new professional opportunity with the YMCA.”
Mahar said that he was proud of his role in growing AFL in Southern NSW and Canberra after a nine-year tenure working for the AFL.
“I have really loved working at the AFL over the last nine years and am extremely proud of what the team has achieved during that time.
“AFL as a game has given me so much as a player and an administrator and it has been great to play a small part in shaping the game for others to enjoy.”
Mahar will commence in his new role at the end of February. A recruitment process for Mahar’s replacement will commence shortly.
