Finals Fever: Community and Regional prepare for battle
This weekend will see AFL Canberra’s Community and Regional Competitions take the battlefield for their chance to secure their place in the 2019 Final Series. Jaike Altieri reports…
AFL Canberra Community Men’s Third Grade
ADFA Rams v ANU Griffins – Football Park, Saturday 2:45PM.
Clearly the two top teams of the competition, this match-up looks to put a great show on for the fans. ADFA finished atop of the ladder, but ANU have beaten them this year. With a spot in the 2019 Grand Final on the line, expect a hard-hitting game of football.
Batemans Bay Seahawks v Woden Blues – Hanging Rock Oval, Sunday 2:15PM
The Seahawks and the Blues could only be separated by percentage at seasons end, but Batemans Bay has had the better of Woden both times they’ve met this season. The teams have showed they’re evenly matched though, and a close, intense game is what fans should expect.
AFL Canberra Community Women’s
ANU Griffins v Molonglo Juggernauts – Football Park, Saturday 10:30AM
ANU were a force to be reckoned with all season sitting three wins clear on top of the ladder at seasons end. Molonglo defeated the Griffins in their most recent outing though and will be looking to keep the ball rolling with the winner headed straight to the Grand Final.
ADFA Rams v Batemans Bay Seahawks – Hanging Rock Oval, Sunday 10AM
ADFA finished two games clear of Batemans Bay in third position, but the Seahawks were a bogey side for the Rams, defeating them in both meetings this season. Could history repeat itself with the Seahawks gaining a berth in the preliminary finals? Or could ADFA right their wrongs and defeat Batemans Bay for the first time in 2019.
AFL Canberra Community Men’s Fourth Grade
ADFA Rams v Woden Blues – Football Park, Saturday 12:30PM
A scintillating match-up with these two only separated by percentage at seasons end atop of the ladder. Woden handed ADFA two of their three losses through season 2019, but the Rams are ‘never say die’. A cracking game is on the cards.
ANU Griffins v Batemans Bay Seahawks – Hanging Rock Oval, Sunday 12PM
An interesting game here, with both teams winning once when they met during the season. The Seahawks were dominant last time they played which happened to be on this oval, winning by 98 points. This match could go either way, with the loser done for season 2019.
AFL Canberra Regional Men’s
Cootamundra Blues v Southern Cats – Clarke Oval, Saturday 2:15PM
Cootamundra were unstoppable this season, remaining undefeated throughout 2019. The Blues have handled the Cats with relative ease, but finals is a different beast and a close call for Cootamundra last week will give the Southern Cats an extra boost heading into this weekend.
Belconnen Magpies v Goulburn Swans – Adero Law Nest, Sunday 2:15PM
Belconnen were dominant last time these two met winning by 94 points. Goulburn have had a tough run winning only one of their last eight games after a solid start to the 2019 season. It’s football though and anything can happen and both teams should be ready for a fight.
AFL Canberra Regional Women’s
Riverina Lions v Queanbeyan Tigers – Clarke Oval, Saturday 12PM
The Lions and the Tigers have been the best two teams by far this season. Queanbeyan are the only team to have beaten Riverina, and vice versa. A fantastic match up, with the incentive of a Grand Final berth on the line a fired up and intense game of footy is what to expect.
Belconnen Magpies v Eastlake Demons – Adero Law Nest, Sunday 12PM
The Magpies have lost to the Demons their last two matchups and are coming off tough losses to the top-two sides heading into finals. Eastlake however lost to the bottom-placed side last week. A huge game for both sides, with the winner continuing on in the 2019 finals series, and the loser looking to next year for glory.
