Impressive Jets Post Big Win Over Hawks
MOTW: Round 12 – Tuggeranong Hawks v Gungahlin Jets
Tuggeranong travelled up to Gungahlin enclosed oval to take on the Jets in beautiful conditions on Saturday. The Jets are building every week to try and take a win away from a big side in the final four games of the season, as the Hawks are still seeking their first victory of the year.
The game got underway with the Jets being dominant early with Canberra Demons listed player Will Muir kicking the first goal three minutes into the game. This kicked off a run of four unanswered goals to start the game with Matt Sheldon and Will Hambleton kicking their first and Will Muir kicking his second of the game. The Hawks then played a very good patch of football creating numerous opportunities, but they were unable to convert all of them. Matt Ghirardello was the one to bring some life into the Hawks, kicking the team’s first goal of the afternoon. Stewart Boyd was able to respond though, kicking his first of the match and helping the Jets to a 23-point lead at the end of the first quarter.
Declan Gillian got the scoring underway in the second term with his first goal nine minutes into the quarter. This was followed by goals to Sean Day and Jack Nunn, who kicked their first goals of the afternoon, Will Hambleton and Stewart Boyd, who put through their second goal. It was a tough quarter for the Hawks, who again showed their skill in patches, but they were only able to manage a single behind for the quarter. The Jets extended their lead to 56 points at half time with the score being Jets 10.6-66 to Hawks 1.4-10.
It was again the Jets who came out strong, continuing on from where they left off before half time with Will Muir kicking another goal, his third of the match, to extend the lead even further. The third quarter belonged to Jayden Hind though with the Canberra Demons listed player showing his clean hands and exciting play style kicking three goals in a row from both set shots and on the run. It was another struggle for the Hawks, only adding two behinds to their score and being unable to defend the Jets on transition. The Jets held a commanding 82-point lead heading into the final quarter.
The Jets had their strongest quarter in the fourth with the side booting eight goals and four behinds, as well as keeping Tuggeranong scoreless. Jack Baker got scoreboard ticking with his first goal, followed by goals to Will Muir, Declan Gillian and Luke Martin. The Jets then piled on another four goals in the final six minutes of the game. Morgan Holland, Will Hambleton, Luke Martin and Declan Gillian applied the finishing touches to a strong game for the Jets for their convincing 134-point win. Jets 22.14-146 to Hawks 1.6-12.
