Senior Draw Release and Games to Watch

AFL Canberra is pleased announce the release of the 2020 Season Draws for the Senior and Community Competitions.

These draws can be accessed via – AFL Canberra Website and the AFL Canberra Team App. In what will be a jammed packed season, let’s take a quick glimpse at the games that catch our eyes, starting with the Senior Competition:

 

Thursday and Friday Night Lights

Early season games under the lights for the CareSuper Rising Stars – Men’s are scattered across the early rounds of their season, with the plenty of opportunities to get out and see the young bloods of Canberra Football as the play standalone games across the capital. The pick of the bunch can be seen below:

Thursday 9th April

  • 6:30pm – Ainslie Tricolours v Belconnen Magpies @ Alan Ray Oval
  • 6:30pm – Tuggeranong Valley AFC v Eastlake Demons @ Greenway Oval
  • 6:30pm – Gungahlin Jets v Marist College @ Gungahlin Enclosed Oval

Good Friday Football @ Allinsure Park

The UNSW Canberra Women’s First Grade Season gets underway with all clubs descending on Allinsure Park, Queanbeyan on Good Friday, April 10th for an all-women’s matchday. The only football in the capital for the Easter Period, it’s sure to pull a huge crowd as the best of the best in the Women’s Game take the field to start their 2020 Campaigns, the day will also serve as the launch of the facility upgrades and new away changerooms at the home of the Tigers. With AFL Canberra being the breeding ground for so much AFLW talent, this is going to be a great opportunity to see all of the stars today and tomorrow at the same venue on the same day, the schedule of this day looks like this:

  • 1:00pm – Tuggeranong Valley AFC v Gungahlin Jets
  • 2:45pm – Ainslie Tricolours v Belconnen Magpies
  • 4:15pm – Official Launch and Tour of Facility Upgrades
  • 4:45pm – Queanbeyan Tigers v Eastlake Demons

Super Saturday @ Football Park

The 2019 Grand Final Rematch is the cherry on top of what will be a “Super Saturday” at Football Park, with the Belconnen Magpies looking to seek some early season revenge over the Ainslie Tricolours. With all 6 Men’s First Grade in action on Saturday 18th April, this will be a little teaser for what we will see in the year ahead. With a bit of player movement in the off season and some of the Canberra Demon big guns finding their way back to their local club, will we see the likes of Evans and Bruce pull on their old colours as Queanbeyan and Eastlake face off, and who will jump out of the blocks early in the season with the new look Tuggeranong Valley AFC take the field against the kings of the sky the Gungahlin Jets. First bounce from 1:00pm:

  • 1:00pm – Tuggeranong Valley AFC v Gungahlin Jets
  • 3:30pm – Eastlake Demons v Queanbeyan Tigers
  • 6:00pm – Ainslie Tricolours v Belconnen Magpies

UNSW Canberra Women’s First Grade Grand Final Rematch

Round Three – Saturday 9th May, is the first time we’ll get to see the reigning UNSW Canberra Fist Grade Women’s Premiers the Queanbeyan Tigers take on their 2019 Grand Final opponents the Belconnen Magpies. Both teams will be looking to impress and assert themselves early on the competition, as well as show how well they can perform possibly without the likes of recent AFLW Draftees, Lexie Hamilton, Jacqueline Parry and Hannah Dunn from the Tigers, as well as Maggie Gorham from The Nest. It remains to be seen how both clubs will perform this season, with some player turnover, but we’re keen to see who will come out on top after their first of three meetings for the Home and Away Season.

Rising Stars – Men’s & Second Grade Men’s Rule Representative Round

Friday 15th May sees the UNSW Canberra Women’s North v South Challenge take centre stage under lights at Football Park, with the best of our Men’s heading across to the boarder to play the Riverina Football Netball League on Saturday 16th May, meaning that our Rising Stars Men’s and Second Grade Men’s get to rule the coup, as the only games in the Senior Competition to take place in the capital this week. Get out to Greenway Oval or the Adero Law Nest, to see these guys in action representing your club the only way they know how:

Greenway Oval

  • 9:30am – Rising Stars – Men’s – Eastlake Demons v Marist College
  • 11:20am – 2nd Grade Men’s – Queanbeyan Tigers v Eastlake Demons
  • 1:15pm – Rising Stars – Men’s – Queanbeyan Tigers v Gungahlin Jets
  • 3:15pm – 2nd Grade Men’s – Tuggeranong Valley AFC v Gungahlin Jets

Adero Law Nest

  • 9:30am – Rising Stars – Men’s – Belconnen Magpies v Ainslie Tricolours

Sir Doug Nicholls Indigenous Round

Sir Doug Nicholls Round (23rd to 31st May) provides an opportunity to celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, culture and history and the invaluable contributions Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have made to Australian Football. Season 2020 marks the 14th year the AFL has celebrated Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture, which will be Rounds 7 and 8 of our Senior Competitions, beginning with the traditional Tuggeranong Valley AFC and Eastlake Demons Clash at Greenway Oval. These two clubs have championed this game for many years now encapsulating traditional ceremonies, indigenous themed jumpers designed by local players all an important part of the recognition and celebration linked to such a significant game on the AFL Canberra calendar.

Themed Rounds

AFL Canberra and it’s clubs will again, proudly be supporting a number of campaigns throughout this season as listed below, including using two opening rounds of the Senior Competition (Good Friday Footy and Super Saturday) to raise much need funds for the Bushfire Appeal to support of coastal neighbours who have suffered so much of the recent summer season – keep an eye out for more information on this and how to support, as well as ways to get involved in the Themed Rounds for the 2020 Season:
