AFL Canberra is pleased announce the release the 2020 Season Draws for the Community and Senior Competitions.

These draws can be accessed via – AFL Canberra Website and the AFL Canberra Team App. In what will be a jammed packed season, let’s take a quick glimpse at the games that catch our eyes, starting with the Community Competition:

New Year – New Structure

2020 brings with it an updated competition structure for the Community and Regional Clubs of the AFL Canberra Competition. With all clubs from the 2019 Season now competing in the Community Competition with three flags up for grabs, the 3rd and 4th Grade Men’s as well as the UNSW Canberra Women’s. All clubs will be looking to feel each other out, as some haven’t had a run against each other for over 12 months, we cannot wait to see how the season unfolds with the first bounce for these competitions on Saturday 4th April. 2020 will also see the alignment of a number of clubs during the season, these clubs will share their matchdays with one another as needed, so as to fill out a full three game experience on a regular basis, where possible, in the competition. A summary of the alignments can be seen below:

  • Cootamundra Blues (3rd Grade & Women’s) and Yass Roos (4th Grade)
  • Belconnen Magpies (3rd Grade & Women’s) and Murrumbateman Eagles (4th Grade)
  • Eastlake Demons (3rd Grade & Women’s) and Southern Cats (4th Grade)
  • Googong Hogs (3rd Grade & 4th Grade) and Queanbeyan Tigers (Women’s)
  • Tuggeranong Valley AFC (3rd Grade & Women’s) and Goulburn Swans (4th Grade)

ANZAC Round

The Community Competition will be the only competition in action during the week leading into the Anzac Weekend, with a number of clubs facing off on Wednesday, Thursday or Friday Night across Canberra venues. Whilst the pick of the action can be seen on Anzac Day @ Greenway Oval, with the Tuggeranong Hawks and Goulburn Swans playing host to the Batemans Bay Seahawks.

Grand Final Rematches

Bragging rights will be on the line throughout the season, with plenty of 2019 Grand Final rematches scattered throughout the year, let’s have a look at the first time the 2019 rivals will meet one another:

3rd Grade Men’s

  • ADFA Rams v ANU Griffins @ ADFA Oval – Round 11
  • Belconnen Magpies v Cootamundra Blues @ Clarke Oval – Round 15

4th Grade Men’s

  • ADFA Rams v Woden Blues @ Football Park – Round 6

UNSW Canberra Women’s

Battle of the Barton – Roos v Eagles

Joe O’Conner Oval, Yass in Round 15 will play host to the one and only time these Barton Highway rivals will face off in 2020. The Murrumbateman Eagles head into year two of their time in AFL Canberra, with plenty of momentum, having enjoyed a strong off season with plenty of players on the track, they will be looking to prove themselves yet again batting above their weight. Whilst their local rivals the Yass Roos are no doubt looking to bounce out of the blocks this season, and will have the Round 15 clash marked in the calendar as they look to extended their current 2-1 head to head lead over the new kids on the highway.

Pride Round

Round 15 will see the Molongolo Juggernauts and ANU Griffins continue their fantastic advocacy for the LGBTIQ+ Community with their second annual Pride Game at Football Park on Saturday 25th July. In what was a huge success in 2019 the two clubs will again use this round to promote inclusion and creating a safe place for people to be themselves. Stay tuned for more information on the event, but no doubt this is sure to go from strength to strength as the two clubs and AFL Canberra come together for what will be an amazing celebration of our sport and the people who make it so great.

Themed Rounds

AFL Canberra and it’s clubs will again, proudly be supporting a number of campaigns throughout this season as listed below, including using two opening rounds of the Senior Competition (Good Friday Footy and Super Saturday) to raise much need funds for the Bushfire Appeal to support of coastal neighbours who have suffered so much of the recent summer season – keep an eye out for more information on this and how to support, as well as ways to get involved in the Themed Rounds for the 2020 Season:
