Skilled Tigers Out Class Hawks

MOTW ROUND 12: UNSW CANBERRA WOMEN’S FIRST GRADE -TUGGERANONG HAWKS v QUEANBEYAN TIGERS

Jaike Altieri

The 6thplaced Tuggeranong Hawks hosted the 3rdplace Queanbeyan Tigers at Greenway Enclosed Oval on Saturday afternoon with the Tigers looking to stay in touch with the top two teams on the ladder and the Hawks looking to move themselves off of the bottom of the ladder.

The game got underway in beautiful conditions and the Hawks got away to a quick lead with Alanna Wren kicking the first goal of the game. Unfortunately for the Hawks it was all downhill from there. Megan Godfrey of the Tigers responded quickly, followed by goals to Tarni Evans, Hannah Dunn and two goals to Tegan Hedington. This five-goal spurt gave the Tigers a comfortable 27-point lead going into quarter time.

Alexia Hamilton started the 2ndquarter with a bang, kicking her first goal of the match with Madelyne Czubara also kicking her first. The Hawks were fighting hard and were stopping a number of forward entries for the Tigers, but Queanbeyan’s class and skill was too much for the Hawks. Lani Watson and Chelsey Hamilton opened their scoring accounts with their first goal of the game and Hannah Dunn kicked her second to make it a quarter to forget for the Hawks. The Tigers held a 64-point lead at half time with the score being Hawks 1.0-6 to Tigers 10.10-70.

The third quarter was the best quarter for the Hawks came in the 3rd, with their defence holding up strong and trying their hardest to only give up five scoring shots (3 goals 2 behinds) compared to the 13 from the second quarter (5 goals 7 behinds). Although the Hawks didn’t hit the scoreboard themselves their desperation and willingness to keep fighting was evident and stopped a number of scoring opportunities. For the Tigers, Lani Watson kicked her 2ndgoal two minutes into the quarter, Kaitlin Dobing kicked her first goal of the afternoon with two minutes remaining in the quarter and Alexia Hamilton kicked her second goal right on the three-quarter time siren to help the Tigers to an 84-point lead at the final break.

Queanbeyan responded to their third quarter with a very quick start holding the football in their attacking half of the ground for a number of minutes but only managing to kick four behinds before Tarni Evans kicked her second goal. Chelsey Hamilton then added to her tally, kicking her second before Jess Stramandinoli kicked her first goal of the match. Lani Watson put the icing on the cake with a great left-foot banana from the pocket for her third goal and to end the game on a highlight. The Tigers ran away victors by 115 points, Hawks 1.0-6 to Tigers 17.19-121.
